About Us
Beach Bocce is an adapted version of the traditional game of Bocce, enjoyed by people around the world for centuries – and the perfect social sport. With beaches at the top of vacation destinations and with over half of the United States residing near a coast, Beach Bocce is designed to be an easy companion for beach fun.
Nothing against Frisbee®, volleyball and other veteran beach games, but we thought it was time to freshen up your choices when you’re at the beach. Beach Bocce is the perfect game when the book you brought is bad, the kids are restless, and you can’t sit still under the boiling sun for another second. Even better, pick up your Beach Bocce balls when the sun is setting and you’re looking for the perfect wind-it-down activity with family and friends.
Anyone can play this game. Age and strength are no issue. College students on spring break, families on vacation, retirees filling their leisure time. Beach Bocce is a game for kids of all ages.
Beach Bocce was conceived after the tragedy of 9/11. My wife and I were raising young children and struggling to reconnect to the simpler things, especially quality time with family and friends. In the 24/7 “connected” society we live in today, we found more people sharing our plight, desiring to get together with friends in a low-key, relaxed environment, and return to traditional games and activities.
Growing up in New Orleans and living in the South my entire adult life, I can’t remember not vacationing on the nearby Florida Panhandle, in towns like Destin and Pensacola Beach. From the time I was a little boy collecting Easter eggs hidden in the sugar-white sand dunes, to college fraternity spring breaks, to splashing in the emerald water with my young children, there was never a place I’d rather have been.
One summer my wife and I and our two boys were visiting a friend who lived year-round in Grayton Beach, a charming hideaway between Destin and Panama City. He invited us to join what had become his daily routine: a short walk to the beach, a sunset match of Bocce and beer. He played Petanque, the French version of the game.
We were immediately hooked, having never seen the game played before. After about three sunset “tournaments,” my wife observed that it was a shame that the metal Petanque balls were losing their color and beginning to rust. Our friend noted that the larger Italian bocce balls were made of hard polyurethane “rubber-like” material and wouldn’t rust, but he refused to play with them because they were so large and heavy.
It was our “light bulb” moment. Why not marry the material of the Italian game with the portability of the French game, for the perfect beach game: Beach Bocce. And to take it a step further, why not ditch the dull green and red balls for beach colors? We were on a roll, adding our own beach rules to account for the unique environment the beach presents, including hard sand, soft sand, driftwood, seaweed and threatening surf.
We got to work designing our prototype set, locating a manufacturer in Taiwan who patiently revised and re-revised our sample balls until a year later we had the perfect color, weight and size. We took delivery just before Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, and after a hard-fought return to life and work, we resumed our quest to spread the word and give everyone the opportunity to own the game we had come to love. Today we have customers worldwide and cherish the feedback we receive from many, who joyfully unwind from their hectic lives over a game of Beach Bocce with family and friends.
